My name is Cheryl Crichlow and this is my third year teaching at Concordia University School.   Before coming to CUS, I taught Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten classes.  This past summer, I graduated from Alverno College with a  Masters Degree in Education.  I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and I moved to New Berlin with my husband and children 13 years ago.  My husband, Mike, and I have been married for 22 years.  Our oldest son, Adam, recently graduated from college, majoring in Computer Science.  Our daughter, Lauren, is a student at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.  Our youngest son, Justin, is a senior at Nathan Hale High School in West Allis.

Inspirational Quote: In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success. Proverbs 3:6

The third graders have been very busy learning about animal habitats, ecosystems, and food chains.  We recently took a field trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo and attended class at the Karen Peck Education Center and toured the zoo.  We have also been studying insects and the diffences between them and other bugs.
In Math, we have been focusing on telling time to the nearest minute and we are currently working on counting money and making change.  We will begin a unit on multiplication that will continue into the new year.  We are also studying vocabulary in mathematics and learning how to solve word problems by identifying the key terminology in each problem.   Please have students practice basic math facts every night!

In Social Studies, we are discussing communities and how individuals contribute to the community they live in.  We will examine differences between our community and those of others across the country thanks to a postcard exchange we participated in with 30 other schools.  We are looking at goods and services within communities and the role of government.

Our reading program consists of guided reading groups that are flexible and based on each students reading level.  These groups are studying reading comprehension strategies.  The current focus is on prediction and making connections.  Additionally, third graders participate daily in Readers Workshop which involves a mini-lesson, independent reading and a group sharing time.  Please remember to have students read at least 15 minutes every night and have them fill out their reading logs!

After the holidays, third graders will be introduced to cursive and will be guided through the transition from printing to cursive writing.
