February 23rd: Fieldtrip to the Zoo
March 9th: Classroom Visit from the Zoo
April 13th: Second Zoo Fieldtrip

Dear 4th grade families,
We have many exciting things happening in our classroom.  We will begin our animal adaptation unit where we will study animal adaptations, Wisconsin animals and endangered species. During this time we will visit the Zoo two times and they will also come to us.  We will tour the Animal Adaptations Lab and check out the Conservation Education Center.
We have been working in math groups over the past two weeks on estimation, sums and differences of large numbers and basic division.  Students have also been practicing their multiplication facts and trying to improve their speed and accuracy on their basic facts.  Please encourage them to practice at home.  Being fluid and accurate is essential so that students can be successful when we multiply larger numbers and as we work on division.
In reading we have finished making predictions and moved onto making connections.  Students are looking for ideas that connect things in their text to the real world.  We are sharing our connections and thoughts as a whole group or with partners each day at the end of our Readers Workshop.  Students should be reading at least 15 minutes a night.  Don't forget to sign their reading logs each night!  In addition we have been doing a mystery unit.  Ask your child to share the details of the mystery stories we have read in class.  They are also working hard at writing their own mysteries!

Students seem to be enjoying our new vocabulary challenge words.  Does your child know all of his or her mystery vocabulary words?  Ask them to define the following words:  case, clue, criminal, suspect, detective, evidence, solution, suspense and witness.
We are also memorizing all of the 50 states for our upcoming peace assembly performance with the 3rd graders.  We have over half memorized.  You will receive more information on this fun event as it gets closer!
